Inspired by a series of vintage photographs of industrial extraction in the rural Appalachian Mountains during 1880-1910 this painting is about the industrial buildings that dotted the altered landscape. In researching coal extraction and environmental consequences on the area during this time I learned that ravens and rumpled warblers became extinct. They were documented in abundance prior to industry arriving in this pristine wilderness. These species did not return until 50 years passed after the industry moved out having depleted the natural resources in this landscape altering it forever. What we currently see is what is no longer there.
