About The Artwork

A few years ago I photographed a large flock of birds alighting en masse from local treetops. Later my curiosity was aroused by the number of small, blurry objects against the sky, and on-screen I began to count the smudges, and surprisingly reached a total in excess of eight hundred! Crows have a bad press… deceptively large, oily black, ominously brooding, feeding off carrion, hauntingly perching on graves in churchyards, the subject of one of Hitchcock’s best films, and grouped under a collective noun as “a murder of crows”, although James Lipton’s wonderful book on the richness of the English language, “An Exaltation of Larks, or, The Venereal Game,” gives no hint as to the origin of that particularly evil or deathly association. But those smudges from a previously captured image have become the subject of this abstract painting… “Birdstrike” being the result. Using acrylics on a 115 x 75 cm canvas, Mars black / Prussian blue bird shapes are wheeling and tumbling above a leafy tree canopy with hints of pink dawn light and blue sky filtering through. What do you see?

Abstract artist... stock photographer... writer... plant-based... fixie-cyclist... minimalist... and easy going, I studied Interior Design at art college in the 1960s, then worked in the TV and film industry for more than a decade, before turning to photography full-time. Later I published and edited specialist photographic magazines on darkroom techniques for several years and continue to supply digital images to the world's largest photo agency from my current location here in France. However, in a hard working retirement I spend much more time and energy as an abstract fine artist working with all media from old-fashioned paper, pencil and paint to creative collage and canvas.
