This piece was inspired by the subject and reputations of Harlequins which was popular in the Rococo period in Europe. As with other works, Ratko cuts away much of the detail from Domenico Ferretti's original piece 'Arlecchino and Colombina' (circa. 1740), and focusses on the powerful dynamic of composition within the painting. This painting challenges what we think we are seeing and our prejudices. what we see is a dark-faced man strolling with a much infatuated woman. We only realize after seeing the colour of the man's hands that he is white. In addition to this and the beautiful and dramatic light in the painting, there are other innuendo's (Colombina's hand referencing the female-form, and the phallic wooden swords they each carry). Clearly Colombina is blindly placing her faith in her Harlequin lover.
