About The Artwork

This painting is from a series based on the myth about Daphne's transformation into a tree. I feel that especially now with a multitude of info bits constantly vying for our attention, we oftentimes want a simpler way out. We would love an opportunity to melt into our surroundings, become unnoticed, eternal, hidden from the hustle and bustle. I want the viewers to feel this transformation from a human form to a tree form, to get excited about getting away yet feel this physical discomfort of your skin hardening and turning into bark. I use oil and wax in order to create layers of texture, which I can then melt to uncover gorgeous color beneath.

Diana Stelin's captivating expressionist landscapes have garnered international attention with contracts at Google, shows at Novartis and works in dozens of private collections worldwide. Ms. Stelin strips down and reconstructs traditional notions of landscape painting, using the medium of paint as the subject itself. Blurring the lines between imagery and surface, her work frequently turns borderline abstract, yet is always centered on a theme of her surroundings. Born in 1979 in Chisinau, Moldova, Stelin lives and works in Boston. She received a BFA in Visual Arts from Cornell University in 2001, followed by an MS in Arts Administration from Boston University in 2007, Recipient of the Johnson Museum of Art's 1999 "Cornell Council for the Arts,” Ms. Stelin had managed DTR Modern Galleries for eight years, overseeing the gallery's participation in multiple international art fairs, and establishing long standing artist relationships for its four outposts around US. She's now represented by Invoke Contemporary.
