Bloom Painting

This painting is part of a collection of nudes that I have been working on over the last year. This woman posed nude for the first time in her life for this portrait. Covered in a rash that she had not yet had diagnosed, she felt shy and unattractive. I had her stand in my orchard, which was full of apples. The natural collection of apples at her feet, combined with the red flush of her skin, and the blotches of both skin and shadow made for a startling and beautiful image. The experience left her feeling empowered. I chose to keep the painting mostly void of colour to focus on the shadow play across her skin. There is a sense of unfinished business. The red apples seem to ground her in an ethereal way. The yellow butterflies surround her as though to protect her. I hope that the viewer of this piece will see her strength in juxtaposition with her sweet vulnerability in this garden of Eden.
