About The Artwork

This small yet dynamic oil painting is part of my blue and white series. I absolutely love working with blue as well as with white. I have paintings that are entirely blue or entirely white but something interesting happens when they are invited onto the same canvas. Both can be comfortable 'background' colours however they can also be powerful in their own right. In this series I explore the interplay between these characteristics. Collectors often ask me whether I was inspired by the sea (when viewing my blue and white paintings)... I do not consciously paint the sea but I live five minutes away from the sea and it undoubtably impacts me and my art (the colour, the movement and sense of flow).

Anniek Verholt is an artist from the Netherlands, based in Brighton (UK) and Athens (Greece). She exhibits her work internationally and until recently taught abstract art at the Hampstead School of Art in London. Anniek completed a BA in Art Therapy from the University of Applied Sciences in Leiden in '96 -'00 and immersed herself in an in-depth study into the therapeutic use and impact of art and the creative process. After some years in Greece she established herself in the UK where she works as an artistic therapist with private clients and organisations. Most recently she started a therapeutic arts project in a London male prison. Her interest in colour and light led her to studying glass. She holds an MA in Glass from the University of Sunderland (2004) where she specialised in kiln formed and sandcast glass techniques. In this time the explored the various ways public art could have a positive impact on wellbeing. Verholt's abstract paintings represent her curiosity and studies in the complex journey of the mind. Her paintings are rich in layers, texture and movement. Her work is exhibited internationally and is part of several private collections. She has published a first book which can be ordered from her website. Find more examples of her work or to order her book: www.anniekverholt.co.uk
