About The Artwork

The spring air in rural France is adrift with fluff and insects; the grass is high and jet trails criss-cross the vast blue heavens. This work evokes the feeling of spending the day lying back in the deep grass. This is the third of a series of six pieces called HINTERLAND, which is a series of action paintings referencing the artist's profound moments in nature. The series marks a lost epoch when once there were truly wild places. The acrylic polyurethane paint was poured, flung and drizzled onto 340g cotton duck primed canvas laid flat. This technique, popularised by Jackson Pollock, was adopted so that no human hand directly controlled the application of the medium, in order to reinforce the wilderness theme of the series. Also for this reason, the works are signed on the back of the canvas, not on the image. The artist pigmented the tint base manually to customize a pallet for the painting. The viscosity and thickness of the applied paint make the interweaving textures as important to the piece as the form and color of the splashes. The canvas was stretched for priming but was removed from the stretcher for painting. The high quality of the paint and canvas ensures that the canvas may be stretched and mounted.

DAVID OLIVIER, born 1984, grew up exploring the mountains around Cape Town, where he developed his love for wilderness. Graduating from Stellenbosch University with a PhD in sociology, he joined the University of the Witwatersrand in 2015 as a researcher, exploring the tensions between nature and society. Although matriculating with a distinction in fine art, and taking private fine art classes, David has kept his work private. Drawn to landscapes, David's early work was impressionist, in oils. But in action painting, inspired by Jackson Pollock, David discovered a technique that echoes the vivacity of the wilds. After experimenting with various mediums, he found premium quality acrylic polyurethane to possess the perfect viscosity, drying time, opacity, tone, sheen and durability to suit this technique. Having spent time living in France, England, Muizenberg and a game reserve in Mpumalanga, David now lives with his wife and child in Somerset West, where much of the day is spent rediscovering his childhood haunts with his toddler.
