About The Artwork

The legends of mandrake date back to antiquity. In ancient Greece, mandrake was known as a drug for anxiety and depression, but it was also used as a love filter. The ancient writer Pliny mentions that there were two types of mandrakes, the white male and the female dark blue. From the root of mandrake they made erotic filters and that is why the goddess Aphrodite was also called "mandragoritis". The young people in ancient Greece carried on them pieces of mandrake root, as an erotic amulet. It is said that the mandrake acquired its erotic and magical properties from the witch Circe, who offered mandrake decoction to Odysseus' men and transformed them. The mandrake was surrounded by mysterious supernatural powers due to its anthropomorphic root. According to the legends, it had to be uprooted at night with a full moon, after digging circles around it with a sword.

My love for visual arts led me to study Graphic Design and get my BA from the University of Western Attica - Athens. I worked as a graphic designer for more than 16 years, creating logos, book covers and illustrations for children’s books. I always felt that there was something more that I should explore. So every day I would spend time experimenting in photography, pottery and anything that could satisfy my love for creative tasks. In 2016, a health issue sent me to hospital for months. At those endless, lonely days my companion and relief were my sketchbook and many color pencils. My mind was escaping to beautiful nature scenes, envisioning the moment of a barefoot walk on the beach, the touch on a horses’ head or petting of a dog. These scenes were the greatest motivation to keep trying to get my life back... and it happened! It was then, that I decided to depict this beauty of nature on canvas, so that I could enjoy it every day that I would open my eyes. By the time that there was no more space on my walls to hang one more painting, I already knew it… painting was my passion. And my passion led me to apply for the School of Fine Arts where nowadays I study painting. The combination of illustrative realism with a touch of abstraction, the vivid colors and the high contrasts express me at the outmost. I love experimenting with different themes and materials. My hope is that my work ultimately offers the viewer the chance to connect with the scent and the sound of unpretentious life. Enjoy your tour!
