About The Artwork

A hand-painted, botanical watercolor of the Hollyhock, Alcea rosea. The Hollyhock, also known as Common Hollyhock or Cottage Garden Hollyhock, graces many gardens in Austria and is particularly attractive to and pollinated by bumblebees. This watercolor is inspired by the blooming cottage gardens around Lake Attersee in the Salzkammergut, a place of yearning where Emilie Flöge and Gustav Klimt once spent their summers. The Common Hollyhock is cultivated for ornamental, dye, and medicinal purposes. The medicinal plant contains essential oils and is used as a tea, especially for respiratory ailments such as coughs, hoarseness, and sore throat. Series "Blossomed" Watercolor on Italian deckle-edged paper Paper size: 27.5 x 38 cm Signed and dated Carefully packaged

Judit Fortelny is an illustrator and artist living and working in Vienna, Austria. Her work is a combination of watercolor illustrations and mixed media paper work where she uses historical photographs and postcards to transform thoughts and ideas into images. Focusing her work on watercolor, paper, and vintage memorabilia, Judit Fortelny produces delicate and fragile works that can range from small curiosity boxes to large-scale watercolor paintings. She is inspired by a desire to explore the complexity of time, history and the ephemerality of nature. The excitement and curiosity comes from pushing the boundaries with a medium and the continuous process of transforming the paper in new directions. Themes of opposing forces also run through her work - fragility and strength and heaviness and lightness.
