The way children interpret clouds is fascinating. I don’t see adults doing this very often which reinforces my belief that we are all born artists but, most of us grow out of it. This painting is not really about clouds, it has more to do with how, or why, we see things a certain way. Now, I deliberately painted these clouds with geometric shapes, I made them heavy and impossible to be realistic, I titled it, “Boulders,” in the hope that people would at least make a correlation between reality and illusion. But, no one noticed, and trust me, I have no shortage of people pointing out my mistakes. Adults said things like, “Oh, I just love paintings of clouds,” but, my daughter who was six at the time said, “I love Popcorn!” – A while back I read, “A Separate Reality,” by Carlos Castaneda and remembered this quote, “We are beings who are going to die. We were programmed to live like beasts, carrying loads of customs and other people’s beliefs until the very end.” I think there's a lot of truth to that so, my question is - when does this start to happen?

Statement: What is human, if not a catalyst to express the abstract form. There is a type of transcendence that occurs in Art, an almost contradictory hypnotic state of awareness. The existence of that intimate relationship between a painting and its viewer is fundamental, the obscure and imperceptible language that is only recognized by each individual, my mother would say, “ I know what I like.” There is an intentional evasiveness in my work, these are the things that are implied. When figures and nature are more about shapes and atmosphere they are reduced to emotion, this mood is their strength. Abstraction, by its very nature is disconnected and ambiguous, it’s this detachment from reality that allows it to become a middle ground for cognitive subject matter. Something familiar but not specific - a sense of place but from a separate reality. See more: http://www.ajvalero.com/about-3/
