About The Artwork

Memory works through recalled sensations, much of the detail of an experience is often lost, but recollected sounds, colors, smells, and touch can trigger an emotional tone or state of mind, which can lead to deeper remembrances. Breakfast at the Beach is of this order, evoking an experience through sensation. Pale to deeper hues of greens, blues, greys and off-whites, flickering lights, contrasting elements of wet and dry, tranquility and agitation, and intimacy and distance fill the twelve panels, sensory sensations that would have been present at a breakfast on the beach in the early morning hours. On this particular occasion, a man on shore calls to fisherman in a nearby boat, fills their vessel with a miraculous catch of fish, cooks a hot breakfast over coals of fire with some of the catch and talks to them of their future with Him. The details of this remembered event can be found in John 21:1-19

Since retiring as a professor of art education from The Ohio State University in 2016, Sydney has returned to full-time artmaking. During her tenure as a professor, she researched and wrote extensively about the artmaking process, authoring the widely-read text, Teaching Meaning in Artmaking (2000), and, most recently, a work in process, Naming Play for Artmaking. These writings entertain strategies that inform her own artmaking practice, most particularly that of play as it involves chance, nonsense, and experimentation. Through this process, she draws together the disparate to bring forth new ways of thinking such as intertwining a playful aesthetic of oppositions with spiritual seriousness in her most recent work.
