About The Artwork

In 2004, Brian Charles Lara achieved a remarkable feat, scoring an unbeaten 400 runs, surpassing his own 1994 record. Inspired by this achievement, artist Johann Bennett created a collection dedicated to Lara, with pieces displayed at Brian Lara's Residence, the QPO and the UWI SPEC. Johann’s attached artwork; entitled “Brian Charles Lara-Taking Evasive Action” is a cherished part of the 2004 collection. The painting captures Lara gracefully evading a menacing bouncer from the England team, symbolizing efforts that the viewer may take to avoid negative outcomes, echoing the world's resilience to the recent COVID-19 pandemic and the historical struggles of freedom from oppression. The artwork skillfully portrays Lara's inner joy and confidence, reflecting the resilience required to overcome challenges and the satisfaction of successfully avoiding obstacles. Ultimately, it celebrates Trinidad & Tobago's beloved son, Brian Charles Lara, as a symbol of triumph over adversity, transcending time.

Trinidad and Tobago

Johann Bennett is an artist born in the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago in 1978 in the town of Sangre Grande. With a career spanning over two decades, Johann has distinguished himself as a consummate artist, passionately sharing his creative vision through his art studio venture, "Johann's Artistry." Throughout his artistic journey, Johann's canvases have been a tribute to Trinidad and Tobago's rich tapestry, capturing the essence of its Cultural and Sporting Icons, the breathtaking allure of its seascapes, landscapes, riverscapes, waterfalls, flora, fauna, and vibrant wildlife. His paintings eloquently blend realism and impressionism, with abstract elements that infuse each piece with a unique vibrancy. Notably, "The Sound of Our Unity" (2003) immortalizes Trinbago's musical and cultural luminaries and graces the FCB Financial Centre at the Queen’s Park Savannah. Dedicated collections to cricketing legend Brian Charles Lara (2004-2006) adorn Queen's Park Oval, Brian Lara’s residence and The UWI Sport & Physical Education Centre, St. Augustine Campus. In 2009, Johann's artistry honored the iconic athlete Granny Lucess with a masterful portrait, presented as a Lifetime Achievement Award during the 2009 UWI SPEC Half Marathon, a testament to Johann's ability to encapsulate the spirit of his subjects. Commissioned in 2015 to create the then Campus Principal, Prof. Clement Sankat's official portrait, Johann showcased versatility and depth beyond culture and sport. An alumnus of QRC and a dedicated staff at The University of the West Indies, St. Augustine Campus, Johann's art continues to resonate. His recent triumph in The UWI 75th Anniversary Celebrations Art Competition with the painting entitled "Pelicans in Flight at Tobago Pigeon Point Sunset" attests to his enduring impact. Johann's journey is underpinned by deep gratitude to the Almighty Creator, whose divine gift of talent has allowed him to create art that touches hearts,
