About The Artwork

Saratoga Springs is a great place to go and experience so much: music, art, culture, great food & drink, and of "course"—for six weeks in July and August—horse racing. It's also the home of some outstanding architecture throughout the city. The variety and quality is amazing, and so much of it is in great condition. Not to mention LARGE! Last August I had the privilege of showing at the Mimosa Gallery on Broadway (which sadly closed at the end of 2013 after nine great years). It seemed a successful exhibition, in part due to multiple visits made to the city with my wife Sue, to try and get a real feel for what was around me. I could have taken years and years, but had to draw the line—literally—and get to work. Many new city paintings were included. Among the new Saratoga pieces in the show was this one, "Broadway Bay" which allows both an exploration of some fun architectural details and the study of morning light caressing the outside and inside simultaneously, illuminating only a little on the mystery of what happens behind closed doors.

born: 1958 Troy NY, USA David Arsenault was first captivated by art in 1970 when he discovered a reproduction of Edward Hopper's painting "Gas" in a grade school library book. However, it wasn't until the early 1990s--more than twenty years later--that a professor in his graphic arts program reintroduced him to Hopper's work and he decided to study painting. The early influence had it's effect on him to the degree that The Wall Street Journal wrote that "Some of Mr. Arsenault's paintings could pass for works by Edward Hopper." He studied painting at the University at Albany (NY). Since 1993 when he first began showing, David has had or participated in well over one hundred fifty local, regional, and national exhibitions. He has shown in New York, Chicago, on Cape Cod and Martha's Vineyard in Massachusetts, throughout upstate New York, and now in Rockport, Massachusetts at his gallery, The Art of David Arsenault. His oil paintings, giclee prints, and reproductions are found in private and corporate collections around the world. Arsenault became a juried member of the Rockport Art Association in 2015. He and his wife relocated to the seaside town of Rockport, Massachusetts in November of 2014; in March of 2015 they opened The Art of David Arsenault Gallery; now in it's seventh year of existence, it resides at 8 Dock Square in the historic downtown Cultural District. His work is best known for large shapes, dramatic lighting, and strong color, which creates a compelling sense of mood, time, and place. Each piece presents a quiet exploration of everyday life. Arsenault strives to describe instants of shared human experience by expressing the transformational qualities of light, a sense of deeply personal encounters, and the elusive moment frozen in time.
