Seventy individual oil on wood panels of overlayed curvilinear figures in primary colors which create secondary and tertiary colors due their translucency. The figures in these pieces explore the possible paths around and across the five by five inch squares by a one inch stripe. Part of a series of works inspired by the slide puzzle. These pieces explore ideas of incompatibility, futility and inevitability through the simultaneous presence of several patterns, images, sequences or other artifacts in the same composition. They are reflective of the ubiquitous grids through which we navigate the apps which dominate modern life and the increasing gamification which leads to a sense of fatalistic bewilderment at odds with the supposedly rational and logical systems which underly them. These 'meanders' can be constantly rearranged and multiple pieces may also be combined or split to create new configurations and sizes of work ranging from small pieces such as this to very large mural style installations. I have named these pieces 'meanders' in reference to works by Anni Albers. When developing these pieces I was looking for ideas regarding colour combinations and decided that Josef Albers work might be a good reference. As part of that search though I came across his wife's work and was struck by the similarity in the designs. Each panel is shipped with a hanging strip enabling continuous reconfiguration of the piece after initial installation to explore the many designs available and possibly allowing some if not all the layers to be resolved. The seventy panels that make up this piece will be shipped in a box not a tube as stated on the listing.

The unavoidable distortions and errors in attempts at communication and representation are the enduring preoccupations of Northumberland based artist Christian Dodd’s practice, which continues to evolve through explorations in a variety of media. Dodd’s work is often the result of a combination of accident and design. The resulting pieces contain ambiguities and abstractions which invite pareidolic or interpretive responses.
