The Winter Spirit lies with her dying companion in the dirty snow. The American Bison was decimated by settlers moving into the West, their numbers depleting by the millions within 80 years in the 1800s. Although they were the livelihood of the Plains Indians, their carcasses were left to rot by the hundreds by hunters who were just killing them for sport. This piece is a tribute to that particular low point in American history.
