About The Artwork

A weekend in Carmel resulted in this photo. The two gray days we had created perfect lighting with muted tones and soft shadows. One day we drove along the 17 Mile Drive and stopped several times to get out and check out the views or crawl over rocks to catch a glimpse of tide pools. Once home I went through my photos and chose one to paint. This piece is 16x20 on wood panel. I tried to catch the shades of the rocks and the water that flowed around them. The teal and aqua tones are my imagination because I just love to use those colors. The lower right gives a hint of the beach that warms up the piece just a bit. I’ll have it framed in a white floater frame which fits the beach look. Copyright 2020 Jan Weiss www.janweissstudio.com

I am a native California artist working in a variety of mediums from acrylic on wood panel and canvas to digital renderings and typography. "My earliest memory of knowing I wanted to make art was after I received a set of high quality felt tip markers as a Christmas gift. The back of the package had a painting by Monet - who I was not familiar with at the time - and after seeing the image I thought that someone rendered that painting with markers. Which led me to believe if someone else did that then I could too. What ambition for an eight year old!" My work ranges from abstract landscapes, to modern design, typography and a clear activist influence to some of my work appealing to feminists and outspoken progressives everywhere. I believe in the democracy of art; that art belongs to everyone and create works that fall into a variety of prices making it available to a range of budgets and buyers. “My art is an adventure. I am constantly trying out new styles and techniques but when I look at my collection I see a similar palette or unique signature that defines my individual nature. I continue to grow and learn and discover through my art". I received my BA in Fine Arts from Cal State East Bay and show in galleries in the San Francisco Bay Area.
