INSPIRATION I was inspired by my model, a ballerina posing in a Louie XVI chair. She didn't have tattoos but looked like she should, so I gave her some. We were chatting about castles in the sky - our dreams. That caused me to sketch in a castle and integrate it with the model because when one achieves something she desires, it becomes a part of her. Three birds form wings for the girl and castle to keep them in the sky. You can tell how high up they are because if you look to the lower right of the painting you can see how tiny the sun bather on the beach below is. I hope VIEWERS will feel the exhilaration of flying and the giddiness of weightlessness upon realizing that dreaming is just another form of creativity And perhaps someday against all odds they will obtaining the unattainable. For instance, before I painted Castle in the Sky I would have thought such a drawing impossibly complex, but it turned out in fact to be do-able just because I wanted to do it. MEDIUM, SUBJECT MATTER, STYLE The medium is acrylic which I paint on linen. Acrylics are very versatile which I needed for this piece. I take advantage of the quick drying to build up layers, but for rendering I retard it. I also added textiles such as lace, torn nylon, and bits of various decorative fabrics as well as feathers to adorn the girl in her dreams. The image is dramatic and fanciful rendered in my own romantic/surrealistic style It has a pale gold-colored wood edge for it's frame and is shipped ready for hanging.

As a painter, I am an explorer, uncovering, recording and rearranging the beauty of the natural world, as well as the beauty of human beings. I select and distill the very essence of my subject, harmony between nature and humanity, sometimes combining the two. This symbiosis makes the finished work even more beautiful than either of its constituents alone. When you first visit my fantasy world, you will notice a lot of extraordinary things going on in my paintings. For instance, I might substitute a bird for a hat, or a butterfly for a bowtie. These unusual substitutions function as symbols and provide subtle clues and playful suggestions about my work. The shapes of birds and hats, or butterflies and bowties, are so similar that viewers never even question the replacements. I pick the substitutes because they fit graphically and visually. But it is more than that. We as humans fit with nature. We fit together so well, in fact, that I am able to paint a natural object–a butterfly–in place of the bowtie–and viewers can see this as truth. My world will refresh you with its vibrant colors, textures, and interchangeable shapes as you immerse yourself in the integration of nature and humanity. You will be at peace with yourself and at one with nature. You will experience nature in a totally new way and see beauty in places where you never before thought to look.
