One morning on a trip to my garden, I discovered that a swarm of caterpillars had descended onto a newly planted young hornbeam tree. I knew that it would be sensible to remove them as you could actually hear them chomping through the leaves. Anyway, I felt it would be cruel to intervene. The following day, to my horror they had almost entirely stripped the tree of all its leaves. The day after that they had left and were nowhere to be seen. So it was that event which inspired my use of caterpillars as a reoccurring motif. I also love the way the extraordinary creatures can change, which is something I believe we can all can do. We're not fixed but are able to transform ourselves fundamentally. The tree is fine and doing well.

The medium I have used on this original series is acrylic and Posca pens on canvas. The image of caterpillars wraps itself around all of the edges.
