Contact us.Daniel Pincham-Phipps is a prominent British fine art painter and former professional comic book illustrator. He is widely recognized for his distinct style transition from traditional cartooning into a form of fine art that he describes as "Figurative Abstraction," a process deeply influenced by his cartooning days and contemporary art.
Early Career & Comic Illustration
Before transitioning to fine art, Pincham-Phipps built a successful 14-year career from 1978 to 1992 as a commercial illustrator and cartoonist. He worked regularly for legendary British publications, drawing comic strips and acting as a ghost artist for iconic characters like Dennis the Menace. Daniel created his own characters for the Topper, featuring Sudsy Malone who flew around in a bath fighting grime with his duck sidekick from outer space. His work appeared in staples of British pop culture, including:
The Beano
The Dandy
Topper
Buster
Whizzer and Chips
Hanna-Barbera productions (including Scooby-Doo)
Transition to Fine Art
Following his career in commercial comics, he pursued formal art education, studying at South Essex College and later earning a BA in Fine Art from London Guildhall University in 2001.
In 2001, he founded the Southend Stuckists, aligning himself with the international Stuckism art movement which advocates for traditional painting as a primary medium over conceptual art. He featured prominently in major group exhibitions, including the landmark The Stuckists Punk Victorian show at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool during 2004. His paintings have been collected internationally and even caught the eye of the late renowned art critic Brian Sewell, who purchased one of his landscapes and Martin Clunes who purchased a figurative painting. Leaving the Stuckists he says, ‘he couldn’t see any difference between conceptual art and painting it’s all art’.
Artistic Style & Philosophy
Pincham-Phipps' current fine art directly marries his cartooning history with post-war fine art movements.
The Comic Influence: His canvases frequently boast the highly vibrant colours and heavy graphic linework carried over from his decades illustrating children's comics.
Artistic Movements: His style heavily channels Abstract Expressionism, Neo-Expressionism, and Urban Expressionism, citing foundational artists like Willem de Kooning, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Per Kirkeby and Miodrag ‘Dado’ Duric as major inspirations.
