About The Artwork

The symbols are taken from an ancient Chinese oracle bone. These are some of the earliest forms of writing and were written questions, hopes, fears or wishes, carved onto a bone to which intense heat was applied. The cracks that appeared were interpreted by the diviner as to how the question was to be answered by the Gods. In painting this work I used stickers in the shapes of these Chinese characters, over which I scraped the paint with a squeegee. Peeling off the stickers revealed strange and unexpected shapes and colours, as if I was the diviner revealing how my painting would be seen. The intricate blues, yellows and greens were incredible to behold for the first time. Sometimes it seems that the Gods are involved in the painting process - whichever God you believe in - and that somehow, in some mysterious way - this is what controls the power of chance that artists can harness.

My art is about place and identity, inspired by travel and experiences of locations around the world and the people who live there. My impression of the sense of place is the starting point; I try to capture the enticing idyllic atmosphere of faraway places, the colours, textures and character of the scene before me. I am enraptured by travel, and have lived in six different countries during my lifetime - I have taught and painted during these wonderful experiences around the world. My love of languages and different linguistic scripts is the starting point for my abstract works; and although they have a freedom of direction (as all abstract work must do), motifs and languages (mostly ancient) are the point of reference and substance for these creative investigations. Now I am based in Liverpool, England, my home city. In some of my work I have represented the different aspects of this intruiging city, the make up and temperament of the things I see every day. I hope you enjoy viewing the work as much as I have enjoyed creating it.
