About The Artwork

Often feeling misplaced in this society but at peace in nature. This artwork explores the disconnection we can feel in a saturated and digital world. Mother nature offers respite from the demanding nature of the society we exist in; creating time for reflection and recuperation. This painting was a means of escape for me; allowing me to reject the insistent scrolling and double tapping that our thumbs are so comfortable doing. The surface itself is made up from canvas and collaged paper, including threads in the lower right corner, gently alluding to deterioration. When viewing this piece I hope for the viewer to feel a sense of peace; providing them with the opportunity to pause and reflect on their current place in the world (physically and metaphorically).

Gretel Warner portrays the female nude as a lens into the complexities of womanhood within our fast-paced, social media-centric world. Her mission is to reclaim the iconic representation of the nude, celebrating the female form authentically and candidly without the filters imposed by social media's glare. Drawing inspiration from personal encounters, feelings, and recollections, her emotionally charged paintings often evolve into abstract and dysmorphic forms. Within her practice, Gretel seeks solace from the whirlwind of both digital and physical realms, offering a space for both herself and her audience to pause and reflect. Exploring emotions through a vivid spectrum of colors and alternating between refined and expressive brushwork, she delves into the fluidity of identity and the ever-shifting nature of the human psyche and physique.
