About The Artwork

This piece forms a part of my new and ongoing series "Dreamers and Heroes" Chris Hani was a hero of the struggle in South Africa and was a moderate leader who led the South African Communist party at the time when various political parties and organisations were finally unbanned. At the time of his murder in 1993 South Africa was on the brink of a civil war and it felt that this event was the tipping point. Protesters marched on the streets of the cities and people were furious. It was only Nelson Mandela who managed to calm the situation and call the people to peace. When I think back on the time, these fiery colours come to my mind, hence the chosen palette. I have also started to introduce symbolism into my work by means of subliminal texture. On closer inspection you will notice the Hammer and Sickle (The communist parties emblem embedded into the painting) I wish for the viewer to feel and remember the life of Chris Hani.

Ex adman, now full time painter of contemporary portraits and nudes. I run a busy loft style studio in Salt River Cape Town where I paint and also teach drawing and painting. I like to help artists out of their comfort zones and help them to find their own handwriting in their art. I am currently busy on a series of contemporary portraits of interesting and positive African people that I meet through my studio. Some of these portraits now hang in private collections in New York, London, Paris, Munich and Berlin. I am aiming to have an exhibition in Berlin later this year.
