About The Artwork

The „Favorites“ series consists of oil paintings which were created within the scope of a cooperation between me and other artists. As an integral part of the concept, the artists named their favorite movie and a random number with a maximum of five digits as a time stamp. Stopping the movies at the corresponding times created unpredictable freeze frames, which in the next step I transfered into oil paintings. The following details apply to all paintings: Oil on canvas on wood, 33x60cm, 2013-2015. The titles of the individual paintings break down as follows: Name of the artist / name of the favorite movie / time stamp.

Jan-Hendrik Pelz's works are mainly situated in the field of oil painting. Many of his works take on the medium itself or put the medium to the test. Pelz's artistic position moves across borders between media, whereby painting and conceptual approaches are fused with performative elements. Among the key starting points of his work are the search for strategies to unveil new ways of image composition, the engagement of the artist as creator, as well as heteronymous influences on the artistic process. The themes in the field of performance and video art revolve around social processes, the integration of urban space as well as its residents, the employment of familiar formulas and their alienation as well as the examination of the self with regard to the observer’s reflections. Work on individual series and bodies of works, some of which are created in collaboration with a team, often extends over a long period of time. Almost always, several pieces are worked on simultaneously. Jan-Hendrik Pelz currently lives and works near Stuttgart. For more information feel free to contact. jan-pelz.de
