About The Artwork

Bright, vivid set of four of oil paintings on Polaroids* in the ongoing City.Skies.London series by award-winning British artist Sarah Kudirka. (This collection of images is considered by the artist as a single artwork within the series). The title of this piece refers to the Bethnal Green area to the east of the City of London where Sarah has worked in her studio for many years and on which the images were based. When did you last look up at the sky? With her high-original City.Skies.London series of paintings on Polaroids, Sarah asks us this question. Her focus is on picturing the slices of sky squeezed in between buildings as she walks around cities. Her point is that while we all spend too much time looking down at our phones or our feet in urban life, her job as an artist is to do precisely the opposite. *Sarah uses film that is equivalent to Polaroid stock made by the firm Impossible Project/HQ NB This artwork has been exquisitely framed (by Mark Darbyshire) under highest-conservation-standard museum-quality glass

Sarah Kudirka (nee Davenport) is an award-winning contemporary British artist who makes art about the shapes and edges of things: buildings, cities, objects and words. An artist producing striking and mature work, she brings both passion and playfulness to her work. Sarah's paintings are made by using oil paint and pencil applied directly over Polaroid shots that she has taken while walking through cities. The idea is simple: walk and look up at the sky in between the buildings. The resulting art is compelling. She reimagines the city streets and skyline in paint and pencil on Polaroid scale, never copying the photo obliterated beneath. Her series 'City Skies London' now numbers over 400 images and they are available both unframed and in exquisitely framed grids. Just a couple have been enlarged and are offered as limited edition prints. Sarah is now also working on series about Berlin, Glasgow, Hong Kong and Sydney. The artist is inspired by all sorts of stuff to do with material culture; street furniture; the built environment; urban landscape; design; language and architecture. Characteristically lo-tech and handmade in aesthetic, Sarah Kudirka's work is regarded as technically-innovative, accessible and beautiful.
