About The Artwork

Across the three decades of painting since I received my MFA, my work has ranged from non-objective, to abstract, to renditions of cloudscapes and detailed landscape elements, to abstract with referential elements. My intention in painting is to create works that draw the viewer gently into an introspective state of mind, I have become interested in portraying the extraordinary through depiction of the ordinary. I seek to engender that feeling you get from time to time when, caught of guard, your usual surroundings seem new. Through my formal use the elements of space, form and color, I pose questions rather than press a narrative. Color acts simultaneously as atmosphere and object in my work. In these works I have juxtaposed flat and gestural painting emphasizing the two dimensional quality with the flowing, seemingly three dimensional imagery, which moves into deeper space. The tension between the surface reaffirming and the flowing imagery creates a formal dimension and structure to the work. Energy and tension are also generated by a vacillation between lush and austere colorings. Size and format are used to influence the reaction of the viewer. Peering at a small painting creates a different emotional response than standing in front of a large canvas that completely fills one’s visual field. I choose the format of the painting; square, vertical or horizontal, based on the intention behind the painting. The square format reinforces the abstract quality, using the horizontal lends itself to interpretation of imagery as landscape. Each painting is an open-ended exploration, there is no single interpretation of my work. It is my hope that my work will invite contemplation, drawing the viewer into this moment away from their ongoing activities. I hope the clarity of the work engages their attention, calling them to a moment of reflection. I use professional museum quality oil paints, canvas and wooden frames . The painting is signed, titled and dated on the back. The sides are not part of the painting and show the white canvas. The painting is ready to hang, unframed and doesn’t need a frame or any additional surface treatment. The piece will be safely shipped in a custom packaging and will be accompanied by a certificate of authenticity. If you have any questions about this painting or any other piece, feel free to contact me and I’ll get back to you as soon as I can. Thank you so much for taking an interest in my work.

RitaMarie was born in Providence RI and studied painting at Worcester Art Museum School before attending Bennington College, where she studied with Pat Adams and Phillip Woffard and received an MFA in painting and sculpture. Initially drawn to color field painting, her exposure to the remnants of strict formalism at Bennington caused her to begin exploring figure/ground relationships and the inclusion of cues from the outer world. She began thinking of how abstraction could hold meanings and act metaphorically. She sought ways to engage her viewers who might otherwise pass over color field work as pretty decorations. Moving to NYC her painting continued this shift including more referential markers. She pushed her painting into a realm between landscape and abstraction. The abstract use of color creates an experience of light and place, the color and the light act as phenomena in the painting. At this time she began to practice meditation and began to think of art as a spiritual expression and her paintings as an extension of meditative work. She strove to express in her paintings, the lessons of spiritual growth and the internal events which we all experience, which change and shape us. In the past few years she has begun to work in series to focus and structure her work. A narrative is carried throughout the paintings, the narrative of the interchange between the artist and the work.
