About The Artwork

This 20"x 16" oil painting was inspired by tradition and incorporates a sense of imaginative playfulness. A glass vase filled with golden yellow forsythia branches stands firmly on a table draped with a patchwork combination of prints and stripes. The soft green floral design and vibrant stripes in golden yellow, turquoise and violet add something unexpected to the standing spring bouquet. A bowl of simple cinnamon brown pears are touched by inventive bold indigo blue shadows and a bright white light that filters through the arrangement. The simplicity of the painting is juxtaposed by its detail, with each stroke of the brush cleverly depicting something sensory. This ranges from the delight in the delicate petals of the forsythia flowers to the smooth skin of a pear. The backdrop of large panes of light blue, soft violet, and white are arranged in a way that is suggestive of windows to the outdoors. The painting has a very distinct style that embraces aspects of stained glass. The painting was inspired by my love for spring and the first signs of that season appearing through the golden yellow forsythia in my backyard. I painted this on a gallery wrapped canvas. It is signed and comes wired to hang without a frame. The painting is also frameable.

ARTISTS STATEMENT: I observe, and participate in, the change of hues. I stand alone in a perspective—influenced by the roads and detours that I’ve chosen. The subjects I interpret on canvas dance with tradition, but underneath exists an individual search for freedom. As a creator, I’ve always been interested in working with color. I see my life as having a palette of its own and I seek to have the chroma of my experiences come through in my paintings. Over time, I’ve realized the only way to achieve this goal is to risk exposure—to unveil my simplified forms to the viewer. Whether the forms operate within the context of landscape or still life, the resulting narrative is always a story of merit, regardless of public perception or understanding. BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION: I was born in Vancouver, BC in 1958 and then moved to California which is where my parents originally met. I lived there until I was 6 when my family moved across the US to New Jersey for my father's work. I grew up in a creative family and pursued art in college only to leave it upon graduation, dabbling with it over the years that followed. In 2010 I returned to painting on a more committed basis. This was spawned by some significant life changes and painting became my respite. I still reside in New Jersey and as an artist I appreciate the proximity to both Philadelphia and New York City. I've been showing my work since 2011 and continue to do so.
