Every year, I go horseback riding in the Missouri Ozarks at a beautiful place that also breeds Missouri Foxtrotters. I always take my camera along because the horses are super friendly, curious, and cooperative when it comes to photographing them. This painting is of a yearling filly who kept following me around and getting in front of all the other fillies so that it was hard to photograph anyone but her. I figured she deserved to be painted for her efforts. Something about the soft light on black hair was just asking to be painted, to find all the colors that hide in black.

My name is Karen Broemmelsick, and I’m an animal lover. I’ve had dogs all my life - I can’t even imagine what it would be like without at least one by my side. I’m also a tiny bit horse crazy... I can’t get enough of photographing and painting such magnificent creatures, and for the last several years, I’ve had a beautiful Missouri Fox Trotter mare to call my own. Cats are a more recent addition, and while they seem so completely different from dogs to me, they are every bit as unique. I put love and care into each brush stroke to craft a painting that reflects that which we love most about our animals. I look for the strongest qualities of each animal and I learn the story of each one I paint - most of them I’ve met in person. Most of all, I strive to create paintings that will connect you with the animals you love. A little bit more about me: Growing up, I was very allergic to cats and horses (and a whole lot of other things...). I couldn’t spend much time around them at all, even though I wanted to. At least I wasn’t allergic to dogs! I took a few horseback riding lessons when I was little, but couldn’t actually spend much time around the barn or caring for the horses or I would be sneezing with itchy, watery eyes for the rest of the day. Obviously, that wasn’t much fun, so I ended up admiring horses from afar for the next 15 years or so. As I got older, and with allergy treatment, my allergic reactions diminished significantly. When I was in college, my mom bought a horse, so I’d occasionally go with her to the barn to practice my photography. It was then that I realized I could finally be around horses without having much of a reaction at all, especially if I took precautions and washed my hands frequently. Now I have a horse of my own, a headstrong Missouri Foxtrotter mare named Molly. I also have a devoted Goldendoodle named Finley.
