About The Artwork

Throughout my travels, some of my favorite moments occurred when I was struggling to communicate with the locals.  It was during these strained exchanges that I noticed how the barrier caused by the lack of a common language can enhance the connection between humans.  Things like facial expressions and body language become more important, and it seems the whole body itself is employed in the task of relaying information.  In turn, one has to study the other person more closely in order to pick up whatever clues are being offered.  The challenge to understand each other produces a heightened receptivity in us that can have the effect of creating a more intimate than usual situation. I see that participating in this kind of stimulating give and take has been an unforeseen benefit of travel, and has been a big new influence on my work.  I now wonder if we humans prefer the comfort of having answers, or the challenge of uncovering them.  It seems to me that we enjoy the activity of mining for truth.  Funny, how it was not the direct exchange of ideas while abroad, but the effort of the exchange itself that left a mark.

Max Neutra is best known for his ongoing bunny street art project. Conceived as whimsical idea created at a live painting event in Barcelona, he will tell you that the bunnies have since evolved into a study of space and motion, a meditation on achieving balance, and a pursuit of the perfect curve. Having spent years painting publicly at events across several countries, Max developed his own signature technique. Building up layers of acrylic paint as if it were watercotor, he creates images that have depth and motion seemingly contained within carefully honed borders. In his work, he often celebrates the aesthetically pleasing lines of industrial design, explores the evolution of music, and revels in the natural satisfaction of coming face to face with another species. Today, Max continues to foster a spirit of discovery while raising his daughter and creating art in Santa Fe, NM.
