The painting on enamel "Components" is a unique work that participated in an illegal exhibition in Moscow, Russia. When COVID-19 has crippled many areas of our lives. For art, the pandemic has turned into two sides of the same coin: on the one hand, artists all over the planet have a single theme in their work – this is a whole stage in the world of art. On the other hand, offline galleries, museums, fairs and other places where art comes into contact with the surrounding world and the audience have been closed for quite a long time. At one of the stages of the second lockdown, when transport, restaurants and clubs were opened in Russia, but galleries and museums were closed, 40 artists gathered to hold an illegal exhibition "From Russia to Nowhere". We occupied the train car, made a gallery out of it, hung our works there and made a good note of it! My work "Components" took part in our illegal exhibition "From Russia to Nowhere". Five enamel plates are fixed on the wooden substrate: "Time", "People", "Problem", "Artist", "Art". "Time". A picture where the time is shown as a colon, like on an electronic clock between hours and minutes. The colon is smeared by the movement of the artist's hand, which creates a trace like a machine if you photograph it at a long exposure. Interestingly, the colon is an attribute of a modern watch, which makes it clear that we are not just talking about time, but about modernity. "People". This picture also has a dual feature. The many connected dots that mimic the crowd are not painted with a brush at all. This is the imprint of a medical mask of a characteristic blue color. And now we get a hint of a dialogue about the problem. "Problem". Here it becomes obvious that we are talking about a pandemic. A bright yellow spot, it catches the eye and it is impossible not to notice it. The technological feature emphasizes my metaphor – this enamel plate is deliberately overexposed during firing in a muffle furnace, which partially fades the paint and in some places the color turns from yellow to gray. When everything is good, this should not happen – what is this saying about, about what is happening in the world or about the enamel plate? "Artist". My thumbprint personalizes the work and draws a parallel between this picture and the violation of the law, causing associations with fingerprinting. However, since it is an art object, everything is not so clear. What should actually be illegal- exhibitions or a ban on exhibitions while even clubs are open to the public? The color that resembles blood is also chosen for a reason. It tells us about the sacrifice that an artist is willing to make for the sake of justice and art. "Art". According to Newton's theory, white consists of seven colors of the rainbow. Like this example, art gathers the other components – time, people, the problem, the artist and we get a white enamel plate with nothing written on it. A blank canvas that expresses more than any other canvas on which something is depicted. The work "Components" was created specifically for the project "From Russia to Nowhere". In three hours, we went from "We only have two minutes to get on the train!" to " Hooray! We did it!" People came into the car and enjoyed our exhibition, took pictures with our works. Even the driver of our train walked through our gallery car. When we got off the train, the passengers waved to us from the windows, and we waved to them. Nothing will stop the art!

Yana Rostovskaya is a young enamel artist, abstract painter, landscape painter. “To me, enamel painting is pure fine art, miniature pictures that have no utilitarian purpose and can be placed somewhere between jewellery and painting.” (с) Y. Rostovskaya What is painting on enamel? It is miniature paintings on enamel plates. How is it made? First, a metal base is made and covered with enamel on both sides before being fired at a high temperature (between 750°c and 1400°c) in a ‘muffle’ furnace. The enamel now looks like glass. It is then painted with overglaze colours (metallic oxides) and fired again at a temperature between 740°c and 830°c. The colors become fused into the enamel and the artist adds another layer which is then fired again. While being created the work is fired many times and results in a miniature picture that is especially bright, clear and rich in colors that will not lose their properties for centuries.
