The work belongs to the painting series ‘Natural & Instinctive’.

The square plane consists of two patterns of the same size: there is a scorpion portrayed on the right and the vegetational stylization on the left. The composition offers another perspective of interpretation of the theme of the vital potentials of living beings of our planet.

The armored body is carved with symmetrical sand-colored inserts as an allusion to the day’s hiding place, where the scorpion gains strength before the night hunt. Somewhere between them we can imagine several pairs of sharp eyes that help such a primitive and at the same time justified instinct of self-preservation. This image of one of the hundreds of species of arachnids offers a kind of example of kalokagathia, because isn’t it true that there is a scorpion like understanding of good pulsating under the obvious external beauty – for itself and for its victim?

The composition is filled with mysterious ornamental thickets on the left. The exotic opened flowers, which are interspersed with red strokes, are an irrational and illogical echo of wildlife and restless freedom. The black background provides for the contrast of the image.

All visual signs present in my work speak to your sphere of subconscious, in which the ‘straitjackets’ of culture cease to work. The painting urges you to look at your existence from within its naturalness and instead of dead ideals or exhausting simulacra to experience the luxuries of harmony of Eros and Thanatos, the mystery of which no one has solved.

As a child, when I attended art school, I drew many classic still life paintings and etudes. At the time, I read a lot about Renaissance artists and wanted to be like them in my craft. That was the period when a vision of myself as an artist was formed and I made a lot of efforts to become one. After graduating from the Art College, where I studied the skills of academic drawing and painting, I entered the Faculty of Monumental Painting of the Lviv Academy of Arts. And here everything changed. I realized that I wanted to move away from the academic school and hyperrealism, and in my work I began to think in forms and images. My approach to creating works has changed dramatically. In my works, I mostly began to go by the format in which I work, and the visual elements emphasized the structures of this format. After graduating from the Academy of Arts, I spend most of my time doing graphic, web and UX design. I often wanted to paint something, but due to the busy schedule it remained in my dreams. And then COVID-19 and the quarantine changed everything. There are no better conditions for creative work than isolation. The time when you are left alone with your thoughts, ideas and the opportunity to share a part of yourself, and perhaps with the chances to find people who share your views on the aesthetics of things, is the most favorable and motivating for creating something new. In this case, I just wanted to pay attention to some simple things that surround us every day, and emphasize their nature through the associative series.
