This work is a self-sufficient part of my latest painting series ‘Natural & Instinctive’.

The compositional square is divided by two parallel/equal planes: there is a wasp portrayed on the right and the vegetational ornamentation on the left. The starting point for the holistic perception of this image is in the world of nature and the vital needs of all its inhabitants.

The beautiful well-proportioned body of a winged insect has nothing artificial or superfluous. ID of the wasp is in the ancient simplicity of the survival instinct. The image eloquently signals: ‘Attention! I am dangerous! I know nothing about the state of mind, empathy, moral values and (self)consciousness, I have only a sharp sting and quick maneuvers. Either I will harm or somebody will harm me!’

Generalized clear contours of the body, legs and mandible create a wonderful background for the barely noticeable vibration of very thin receptors that can look for something sweet and can cause pain. Yellow and black contrasts supplant intention and uncertainty, and suffuse with immanently pulsating anxiety. Floral stylization in the same colors attracts with its whimsical patterns, but at the same time it sharpens the premonition of a possible trap.

This painting does not adorn reality, but marks the way to its true relentless experience by means of art: reaction/response, cause/effect, life/death. My visual proposal pulls you out of a relaxed comfort zone, so it should be kept even in the peripheral field of view: who knows, maybe it is its stimulus signs that will help you to avoid a fatal mistake and win the battle.

As a child, when I attended art school, I drew many classic still life paintings and etudes. At the time, I read a lot about Renaissance artists and wanted to be like them in my craft. That was the period when a vision of myself as an artist was formed and I made a lot of efforts to become one. After graduating from the Art College, where I studied the skills of academic drawing and painting, I entered the Faculty of Monumental Painting of the Lviv Academy of Arts. And here everything changed. I realized that I wanted to move away from the academic school and hyperrealism, and in my work I began to think in forms and images. My approach to creating works has changed dramatically. In my works, I mostly began to go by the format in which I work, and the visual elements emphasized the structures of this format. After graduating from the Academy of Arts, I spend most of my time doing graphic, web and UX design. I often wanted to paint something, but due to the busy schedule it remained in my dreams. And then COVID-19 and the quarantine changed everything. There are no better conditions for creative work than isolation. The time when you are left alone with your thoughts, ideas and the opportunity to share a part of yourself, and perhaps with the chances to find people who share your views on the aesthetics of things, is the most favorable and motivating for creating something new. In this case, I just wanted to pay attention to some simple things that surround us every day, and emphasize their nature through the associative series.
