My group of incarcerated readers and writers in the Colorado state prison system inspired this abstract piece. For ten years, I drove all over the state to introduce a love of reading and respectful discourse to hundreds of prisoners who had experienced severe trauma leading up to the crime they committed. Through the buffer of carefully curated novels, we began to break down walls and barriers and for a few hours, I was able to share with the group/s. We left the world they inhabited and fed our imaginations voraciously. This is what I brought to this painting- a suggestion of the world of confinement, but softer and more malleable than the concrete and steel of real prison facilities. The colors and shapes suggest a dreamlike trance, which invites dreams, which invite hope. This is what I always hoped reading would offer my book group participants. This is not a gloomy, sad painting, in my opinion, but an imagined state from which one can sweep open a doorway and rediscover freedom.

The source of my creativity has been ever present during my entire life, an unstoppable energy and imagination that were used throughout my student days, and subsequent careers and always appeared through my approach to projects, problem-solving, and a long career working with books, literacy, and social justice in our prisons. I explored dark and light contrasts in art during the pandemic when my beloved work shut down and I found that painting in a crowded corner of unused space with a cheap, wobbly easel began to reignite my missing pieces. Through persistence, and by submerging myself in learning ways with color, balance, and movement of paint on the canvas, the self-doubt has quieted, and memories and the subconscious fuel my work. I want my work to excite, comfort, and be an enduring source of delight.
