About The Artwork

Connected Figures is a modern painting of a nude. In the background you can see shadows of people. People in motion. Sitting, walking, standing. The nude model blends in with the crowd of people. The work is built up in layers. The layers work towards a deep warm red. First of all, a colorful, abstract layer was painted on the background in different colours. Over this layer is a layer of abstract motifs in just a few colors. A layer of vague figures has been placed on top of this. Shadows. These form the backdrop for the nude. The shadows refer to the fleetingness of life and at the same time wink at times gone by. An adapted collage technique has been used in the work, as a result of which it is hardly visible to the eye that figures have been made of paper. To achieve this effect, the top layer consists of magazine clippings that have been carefully torn off. Only the contours are preserved. After all, I am concerned with the impression of people and that is why the figures have been applied upside down and the color layer has been removed from the paper. This creates a somewhat fresco-like, weathered effect. A classic nude. This is simply put down with a few white and black contour lines. A classic way of drawing. The color is tone-on-tone for an overall calm image. The colors are largely applied in egg tempera. A widely used medium in the past. It is therefore an ancient way of making paint with pigments by hand. I looked it up in an old vademecum of recipes. Interesting! Bubbles have been added for a frivolous touch. On the one hand, these refer to contemporary life, to the bubbles of algorithms in which many find themselves today. Living in bubbles can be easy too; some bubbles therefore have a golden edge. On the other hand, the bubbles are also decorative. The whole is a classic, traditionally modest nude with a contemporary look. The carrier is made of aluminium, the whole is framed in an off-white baking frame. Created and signed in 2023.

Mieke van Os is a multidisciplinary artist with a focus on mixed media constructions. She is increasingly working with things she finds in her environment, also from a sustainability point of view. Remnants of a renovation, residual products of casting materials, pieces of stone or wood, strips of textile. It often results in a material treatment or solution that is not immediately obvious and thus gives individuality to her work. She is looking for an unconventional but traditional shape with a twist. She also looks for composition in her sculptures, the separation of surface and color, as she also does as a painter. A way of working to study form more carefully, visually explore the new topography and rediscover familiar materials. In her work she wants to express something intangible, an atmosphere, a feeling. Her sources of inspiration are very variable and versatile. Whether a work was made 500 years ago or now, she borrows elements from it to do something with it. Ideas also come from the production itself. The work often has a kind of rules and chaos at the same time. At first glance, her work is very diverse. On closer inspection, there is definitely a connecting line. An expression of how the mind reacts to things. Her motto is: “The horizon is infinite, it only knows a limit in ones head. Her goals are to further develop and explore her techniques and to experiment with (sustainable) materials, colors, shapes and sizes (!), in a combination of sculpture, painting, ceramics and textiles; she also wants to focus more on research in working with plant remains and other biomaterials.
