Conor’s Portrait Painting

This piece was inspired by my15 year old nephew who idolizes Conor McGregor. Conor's story has inspired my nephew so much that he has started eating healthier and training too. It has been amazing to see him learn so much discipline from this man without ever meeting him. He considers McGregor to be his hero after hearing the story of young fiery teenager from Crumlin, Dublin going on to become the worlds number one fighter in UFC. my nephew had the original photograph as his screensaver on his iPhone and I asked him to send it to me.. I think he knew that I was going to paint it. I'm going to surprise him for his birthday and give him a print of it. I painted the picture in my typical style. I literally used one brush for the entire painting, laying down a few marks then wiping it clean to repeat all over. I use the back of the brush to carve out lines and bring out the colors underneath. I painted this in one long sitting. I wanted the viewer to be drawn into the eyes of the subject so I made the marks closest to the eyes sharper and more defined whilst the colors are smoother and even smudged around the body and background. this created a focus on face..its a bit like using a camera and choosing were to focus. I also wanted to marks on the face to be sharp and angular to give a more masculine, rugged look to it. I chose to use oil paints as they allow me to paint fast whilst being able to move the entire image around if necessary. I love using oil paints and I really enjoyed making this painting.
