About The Artwork

In "Continent and contained" I think a set of boundaries between full and empty. The relationship established between spaces with photography speaks about the “continent”. This is any dividing lines between our body (language, country, sex, etc.) and on the other side “containment” appears in and of the feminine framed within that continent, the square, the rational concept, what is imposed. The boundary or border represented by the color fields, the parts, cuts and junctions represent that invisible, rejected or imposed.

inesrojo.wordpress.com The expression of the feminine is closely related to body image and our culture remains very specific patterns on it. Our collective around the image of women and the feminine imaginary defines us hopelessly identity within society and on a personal level. The direct relation that the images that make up our everyday environment with the way we understand our body influences how our nature is accepted or rejected either internally or externally. The need to modify ourselves appears, we adopt a performative attitude, we act. It influences in relation to the physical as with the roles we adopt. Gender studies and post-feminism have given my artistic production in recent years. Judith Butler trials are a reference. I do a content analysis of subliminal advertising inserted in directing our gaze and thought to a very concrete concept of what is supposed to be born as a woman (or man). I am interested in recreating that relationship build or deconstruct compositions through appropriate media or photographs of performances that I make of myself. Having Cindy Sherman as a reference, in my compositions the plasticity of the painting is contrasted with the photographic image. The construction comes from putting together parts of a dismembered whole, while deconstruction is given by dissecting and hiding parts to give a new form. The body, the body itself, the female body, shown, cut, battered… The emotional and physical experience come together in my work. In Continent and contained I think a set of boundaries between full and empty. The relationship established between spaces with photography speaks about the “continent”.
