About The Artwork
“Kyoto” is a painting I had in my mind since visiting Japan in 2015. I was inspired by the culture, scenery, and the art I saw during my time there. What fascinated me the most was the underground tattoo culture and the images associated with it. I started off by creating a colorful abstract painting to serve as the “filler” for the objects I’d be painting on top. From there, I carefully painted the outline of the Hannya Mask, the flowers, the crane, the snake, and the bamboo. Filling in the rest black, and allowing the abstract base coat to show through and become the colors within the objects.
