About The Artwork

Course à la catastrophe / Race to disaster Oil on wood panel, framed - Simply and quietly staring at us while we contemplate their presence, Claire Petit’s figures are anxiously waiting to be enlivened by our inquiring stare. They are suspended in time, lost in space. Their innate beauty is riveting, their sensuality tantalizing. They invite an admiration that enlivens them as it enlightens us. As we learn more about them, we sense we are being studied by the figures, making us self-conscious and impregnating them with a consciousness of their spirituality.

Born to an English mother and a French father, Claire Petit lives and works mainly in East of France when she doesn’t set up her art studio overseas. The vibrant red colors of Claire Petit's backgrounds remind us that in all circumstances the heart pulsates. In her work, duality breathes deeply, and from one life to the next, powerful feminine energy dominates: moving, introspective, multiple, often wrapped in a gentle violence. Claire is a self-taught painter who lives and works in the east of France. Since 1989 she has been traveling and working between France and the United States.  She had her first solo show in 1999 in New York City.  In 2004 her work was represented and exhibited at the Grant Gallery in Soho. In 2005 she left for Mexico, where she maintained a studio for three months in Oaxaca. From 2005 to 2010, her work was represented and exhibited by the Opera Gallery in New York City and Miami. During those years she regularly painted large format in New York. Since 2010 her work has been exhibited in Paris, Brussels, Luxembourg, Metz.. The book « The twin inside », printed in 2021, reunites 30 years of painting. Contact us to order a copy.
