CP-001 Painting

CP-001 is the very first painting in the artist Ethan Newman's Circle Painting Series, completed in 2018. This artwork was a result of chance. After spending hours in the studio working on this picture with no apparent success, Newman tossed the canvas to the side in a fit of impatience. Sitting down to look at the mess he had just made, he suddenly saw four black circles in his mind's eye appear on the surface. He leapt out of his seat and got to work. "I was sitting down taking a break and looking at the work in a state of deep discontentment. It seemed that nothing was working out in the painting. Then all of a sudden the circles just appeared to me in my mind's eye, and it felt like this jolt of electricity shocked me. One minute there was nothing, and the next minute it was just there. I leapt from my chair and got to work adding in the circles and other elements until it reached equilibrium. Of all the works in my oeuvre, this one especially sticks out to me as a prime example of the elements of chance and accident in painting.
