The original work was produced by arranging in pairs to form the diptych self-portrait titled “Dialogue with Anonymity (Diptych)” in 2009, which underlay the concept for my art project "The Way I See” in 2013. The project was realised as a touring exhibition supported by Arts Council England. In juxtaposing my self-portrait with the insignificant wildflower like a daisy, I attempted to embody the saying of Caravaggio: “It costs as much effort to make a good painting of fruit or flowers as of figures.” By depicting both subjects with the same intensity and quality, I could succeed in translating Caravaggio's saying, I believe. On this occasion, I decided to make the open edition print of the wildflower available. The insignificance of the flower represents the vast majority of inconspicuous, often oppressed people in the past, present and future yet each one of them was/ is/ will be uniquely beautiful as one of these wildflowers. It is my reflection of the fragility of life along the lines of the Still Life tradition. This work is only available with prints.

Hideyuki Sobue (b. 1965) lives and works in the Lake District, UK, yet grew up as an orphan in Aichi, Japan. Working with drawing and painting, two historic media that have served as a fundamental means of communication since prehistoric times, he explores the unbroken line in the relationship between art and humanity. Sobue uses an entirely original brush hatching technique employing Japanese sumi ink and acrylic. Created through a fusion of influences - the concept of Disegno in the Florentine school of the Renaissance, oriental artistic heritage and neurological studies - Sobue’s medium attempts to create a platform bridging east and west, and explore the interdisciplinary approach related to the human act of seeing. Sobue has exhibited extensively throughout the UK and Japan. Notable exhibitions include “A Letter to the Earth from Beatrix” commissioned by the National Trust and supported by Arts Council England
