ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Dancing in the Kitchen is a work depicting father and son dancing at their home. I was spending some time with this family and this is an interesting scene to me, for I grew up in a typical Asian culture where such interaction is almost nowhere to be seen. This scene particularly stands as a special memory for me and both the people in the painting. One certainly cannot tell that a crisis is going in the family from the picture, like the movie Jojo Rabbit, if audience were only shown the lively scene of the mom and son dancing together, no one knew that war was happening back there. Dancing is a temporary relief from stress as well as an activity connecting people in an engaging way. Linking emotions on par with actions, building a strong yet memorable relationship. As a record like a diary I painted this work, while I’m doing so, the family does not live in that house any longer. It was sold due to unforeseeable incident, neither all the family members stay in one place anymore. Here, hopefully with this painting I could mark this beautiful moment from my heart through hands onto the canvas.
