About The Artwork

This painting, on a beautiful piece of found wood, was inspired by the bombastic style of the great Kabuki actor, Ichikawa Danjuro Xll. The artist worked with him in his dressing room and back stage for more than 15 years, documenting him in drawings & paintings while he applied his make up and donned the gorgeous, many layered silk kimono costumes. He was a quiet, nice person, but completely the opposite on stage, where he played warriors and classic, alpha male characters. I hope that the viewer is enticed into the image by the multi layers of washi, newspaper, writing and the painting itself, with the warrior make up ( Kumadori style). The wood piece was prepared by a fine furniture maker and has a well-designed hanger on the back. This was created from an on-location painting the artist did in the Actor's dressing room.

ARTIST LYNN MATSUOKA DOCUMENTS CULTURE CNN reported: “Few artists so completely dominate their field that their name becomes synonymous with the subject matter, but Lynn Matsuoka has succeeded in capturing the essence of Sumo and has won a loyal following along the way.“Like Degas with his dancers, Lynn Matsuoka set out to depict the particular beauty of performers who devote their lives to an all-encompassing craft, capturing the nuances of the world they create in the process.
