Darkness my old friend is often used to make artificial light of an upsetting but not disastrous situation. I found that this painting which I desperately tried to lighten, screamed the words strong and powerful to me while creating it. I did not like this feeling, because I know that somehow I have lost strength and power in my being. Did I need to reclaim them? When I continued with my work, I wondered if I could or even wanted to. Which made me revisit my old friend Darkness! As a young girl I loved the song The Sound of Silence by Simon and Garfunkel. I found myself singing it again, and felt the same shivers I did then. I realized I like the sound of silence because I am bewildered by people talking without speaking and people hearing without listening. Does strength and power make a person forget to listen and be careful how they talk? Is this why I am not sure if I even want them back in my life? Was that the flash of neon light?
