About The Artwork

I live on the edge of Dartmoor, an area of wild natural moorland in the South of England. It is seeped with atmosphere, legend and natural beauty. Wild ponies live here on the moors. Records show that they have lived on the moors of Dartmoor since the Middle Ages and as such are hardy and resilient. The Dartmoor pony has been recognised as a distinct species and is classified as 'endangered'. The breed was severely threatened during the Second World War when the army used the moor as a training area. Later, mechanisation forced the breed into another decline. Sadly, many of the wild ponies lose their lives because of frequent vehicle collisions. They share the moors with other ponies of all sizes and colours and unknown breeding described as Dartmoor Hill Ponies. However, a recent study has discovered that the Dartmoor Hill Pony has distinct genetics not seen in any other breed before and may give clues to how they have evolved to survive and thrive in a harsh climate.

Steve Nayar is a painter living and working in Totnes, Devon. He originally trained to be an art teacher at Nottingham, Trent University but after graduating forged an award-winning career in design and advertising. He always had a love of animals and became concerned about the growing loss of the planet’s biodiversity. So that, in recent years he has focused on realistic paintings of endangered species in oils, often head and shoulders, gazing out at the viewer, sometimes imploring, sometimes challenging. His paintings are in private collections in the UK and overseas. He donates a portion of the sale to various conservation organisations and he has been a finalist at the prestigious Wildlife Artist of the Year every year, for the past five years. For several years he has been invited to teach in Mauritius and in 2022, gave a presentation at the prestigious Caudan Art Centre, in the capital Port Louis about raising awareness of wildlife through art. Steve is chair of his local art collective, Totnes and Dartington Open Studios.
