Day Tripper Painting

In this painting I started with a range of low saturation, high value colours which I arranged in a series of ‘waves’ running down the canvas. This in itself resulted and a very calm relaxing painting, reminding me of the colour theory work of Joseph & Anni Albers. At this point I decided to push the painting further, by overlaying the cool base colours with a series of high saturation circles of varying transparency. I work from imagination and there is no external subject matter to this work; just intuitive placement of colour and shape as a response to whatever has gone previously onto the canvas. I find this process very meditative and positive but also very demanding as the evolving painting requires time for reflection, re-evaluation and resolution. The most important decision is to decide at what point the painting is complete. I photograph all of work in my studio, which benefits from a transparent roof and a north light, making the photographed colours as accurate as is possible with a digital camera. I also try to photograph on cloudy days again for consistency and accuracy of colour. All paintings are finished to the back edge on gallery wrapped canvas. All paintings are signed.
