About The Artwork

Entonces en algún closet por ahí en algún colgador cuelga el alma en la más triste desnudez Fragment of the poema by Oscar Hahn “Trapitos Al Sol” is a series of intervened paintings on fabric in which the corset is the fundamental element used to express the contrast between graciousness and violence against women. This series refers to the popular Latin American saying that alludes to revealing the complexities which exist within the privacy of the home. In this case I chose the corset as a symbol of that which is imposed on women and the things they are exposed to behind closed doors, bringing about feelings of shame and humiliation. The corset was created in the 16th century as a means to adjust the female figure to society’s ideals of beauty. It is principally used to suppress plumpness and accentuate feminine attributes par excellence which are the bosom and the waist. In a way, the corset becomes a device used to confine and subjugate. This body of work intends to bring to light the conditions women are exposed to against their will, and which they do not acknowledge, either because they are ashamed or because they do not want to betray the privacy of their household, mainly due to fear.

Creative expression not only requires an understanding of art, but also of the self. When one is repressed, consciously or unconsciously, art can be an effective means of expression and a powerful instrument used to examine and consider social issues and matters of human oppression. The essence of femininity itself, as well as the ideals of womanhood that have been created throughout history have become the fundamental issues expressed in my work. Granting this process has been a personal journey, I am aware it is not that different from other women’s experiences throughout life. As women we all face similar issues regarding the roles imposed upon us and the deep consequences this has on our lives. We are programmed, from a very early age, to be submissive, selfless, and obedient. Eventually we learn to forget who we really are. For the past years, I have been using the female figure as a powerful form through painting, drawing and other means of expressing these ideas. Its sensual and organic nature enables me to reveal the sense of powerlessness and alienation that come from the fear of being true to ourselves. The subtleness of the female figure allows me to portray the natural disposition we have to fade away from our own individuality, thus suggesting a sense of tacit abuse and confinement.
