About The Artwork

This painting is mixed media acrylic on canvas. Look closely and you'll notice it features stitching with thread as an alternative way of making some of the marks you see. Several years ago I had an idea for how I could add some structure around my abstract paintings. I felt at the time that my paintings were lacking depth and direction, and that I was just slopping paint around and hoping for the best. So I turned to Photoshop because I needed to be able to move things around and have an "undo" function before I put paint to canvas. I grabbed a bunch of images online and began cutting them up in Photoshop and digitally abstracting them, moving layers around, and getting the composition generally where I wanted it to be. This was back in 2012. I remember being really pumped about the potential of this particular painting, but for various reasons I just didn't get around to executing it until about early 2016 when I had the physical space to paint larger paintings again. So one day last year I dug up this Photoshop image and got to work. It took over a year to complete because it was either too cold outside or too hot (#michiganweather), until finally I said "screw the outdoors, I'm setting up in the basement". The final image references the work I did in Photoshop, but doesn't copy it exactly, which is what I was going for. The digital version gives me a good foundation to start from, and I can have fun from there.
