About The Artwork

This work of mine bears the testimony of the old nation of the people of by gone age. In India the worship of nature- gods occupied the minds of the people for various reasons. They adorned the various elements of nature in recognition of their beneficial effects on their lives and living. These elements of nature helped men in the sustenance of their ‘élan vital’. So these elements were considered as mother-gods, ‘Devi’ later when the idea of idolatry dawned in the minds of the people, they conceived of the images of various gods and goddesses for worshipping with a view to begging favor from these supernatural powers. Indian societies conventionally worship these mother gods with pomp and grandeur and with all magnificence. Unfortunately the women folk who are supposed to symbolize these goddesses are not treated by many in honorable status. In some societies also of some provinces of India womenfolk are tortured, oppressed, molested and seduced by brutal men folk. Evince those sophisticated civilized are as the women folk always do not enjoy a peaceful living. My work is a protest against this social misdoing. Here the ‘Devi’ (The female figure) has been depicted as a powerful as well as revengeful entity wanting to win over the male figure and demonstrating her strength to crush the opponent. Here the lower portion of the male figure has been shown as somewhat weak and crippled where as the female figure(Devi) has been drawn with all strength and power only to show the contrast and also with the feeling of establishment of supremacy to him our the evil and demonic spirit.

I am Gautam Paul I was born in Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal, India. From my childhood, I loved to write poetry, draw, paint and sing. But my parents had huge objection to such work. They did not want me to be involved in such work, because of their financial issues at that time. Later, I got admitted to the Government college of art & craft in Calcutta by some force and from there I passed in 1990 with Bachelor of visual arts. I wanted to be a creative director of an add agency, so I joined a company in advertisement industry. But after the death of my father in 1997 my mental condition deteriorated and against my will I was forced to take the job of treasurer in a Govt (B.ed) college. I then became depressed about life and ran around trying to understand people's lives but could not understand the mind. My father's death threw me into the abyss. I read books, especially Eastern and Western philosophies, from my college library and I looked for answers to many questions about life in that library. Once I protested against the unethical behavior of the principal of the college but he ignored and insulted me and then I vowed to myself to unmask such educated people anyway, and chose painting as my tool. All my early paintings were developed in the protest painting style. I named my mission "The Dak Quest". The main purpose of these paintings was to highlight the dark aspects of society. Gradually, life has changed, the perception of life has also changed, I saw that this is not just nature or society with darkness, here both light and darkness have an equally crucial role. I began to see this world in a new perspective. Image to me is like an unknown dream, just as dreams are not fixed in advance, images should not be fixed in advance I believe and this is normal. The artist translates the flow of time in his earthly life into line and color as spontaneously as the flow of a river. But our lives are uncertain, I don't know what will happen tomorrow, so abstract painting always carries the signature of uncertainty. I have asked myself a lot of questions about why I should paint abstractly. Later I realized that only in the abstract painting with honesty can the primal energy of the artist's life be expressed or the meaning can be maintained. I will find the truth of my uncertain life in my painting without betraying my conscience.Abstract painting to me is a translation of the present uncertain life.
