About The Artwork
I lived in the Middle East for 7 years, and these dhows took traders from the Arabian Gulf to China, India, and beyond, hundreds of years ago. They are still in use today, their construction is waning, however, due to newer designs and materials available. I visited one remaining construction site in Sur, Oman, to observe workers build these boats from memory, using no guides or instructions. Their expertise had been handed down from generations past to the present. For me, the dhow represents the history and culture of the trading culture of the Middle East.
