Diplodocus Painting

One of 14 paintings in a series entitled INVINCIBLE, this piece was created during the height of the pandemic. My work over the last 13 years is noted for being highly intuitive and expressionistic and the INVINCIBLE paintings are no different. However, this series has not so subtle--albeit highly interpretable-- social commentary components woven into it. Extinct leviathans devour and destroy manically happy people. In this painting a group of dinosaurs destroy various people as well as the statue of liberty. The surreal little people hold onto everyday objects and manically smile with little consideration. This painting, like most of my work, is still highly abstracted and stylized with bright colors and bold, energetic mark making throughout. I start with painting non-objective black and white foundation paintings and follow with thick oil paint that is applied with palette knives and rubber tools. A variety of techniques collide in chaotic harmony. The cheerful palette is juxtaposed against the dark and humorous narrative. A signature of all the paintings in this series. I consider these very absurd paintings made for a very absurd time in human history.
