About The Artwork
I explored the concept of painting in a less realistic way—a painting that looks like a vintage photograph: simplified edges and slightly discolored to represent images that were hand-colored. These simplified, almost abstract-looking figures were layered over more realistic-looking Kansas landscapes. The cow grazes solemnly as a huge dirt storm brews behind her—signs of dust storms that took over Kansas in the late 20s and early 30s.
